John Petley was born in London, England. Basically self taught, other
than some formal piano lessons as a child, he played in several local
pubs and clubs before coming to America by way of a job on a cruise ship.
In 1983, his interest in ragtime was renewed when he joined
the Northern Virginia Ragtime Society;
a non-profit organization dedicated to the
preservation of ragtime and related music. He has been a performing
member of the group ever since. He has been a featured soloist at the
Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, MO., and has appeared in
four "Call To The Arts" telethons for Media Cable General, and productions
for the Arlington Community Television System.
